Who Are Dental Hygiene Appointments Suitable For?
Dental hygiene appointments are suitable for anyone who wants to maintain healthy teeth and gums or prevent oral health problems before they develop. Professional hygiene treatment is particularly beneficial if you have plaque or tartar build-up, bleeding gums, bad breath, staining from food, drinks or smoking, or are managing gum disease. During your appointment at Dale House Dental Practice, our hygienist will assess your oral health, gently remove harmful deposits and provide personalised advice to help keep your smile healthy between visits.
Protect healthy teeth and gums
Professional dental hygiene removes plaque, tartar and harmful bacteria from areas that are difficult to clean at home. Regular hygiene appointments help reduce the risk of gum disease and tooth decay while supporting long-term oral health.
Prevent gum disease
If plaque and tartar are allowed to build up, they can irritate your gums and lead to gingivitis or gum disease. Regular dental hygiene treatment helps keep your gums healthy, reduces inflammation and supports fresher breath.
Keep your smile looking its best
Dental hygiene appointments gently remove surface stains caused by tea, coffee, red wine and smoking, helping your teeth look brighter and feel cleaner. Combined with personalised oral hygiene advice, professional cleaning helps you maintain a healthier, fresher smile every day.
Why Choose Dental Hygiene?
Professional dental hygiene appointments do more than clean your teeth. They help prevent gum disease, remove harmful plaque and tartar, and keep your teeth and gums healthy for the long term.
PREVENT GUM DISEASE AND TOOTH DECAY
Regular hygiene appointments remove plaque and tartar that brushing and flossing alone cannot reach. This helps reduce your risk of gum disease, tooth decay and bad breath while protecting your long-term oral health.
KEEP YOUR TEETH CLEAN AND HEALTHY
A professional scale and polish removes stubborn staining and harmful bacteria, leaving your teeth feeling cleaner and your mouth healthier. Regular hygiene visits also help maintain healthy gums and support your everyday oral hygiene routine.
FRESHER BREATH AND A BRIGHTER SMILE
Dental hygiene treatment helps remove surface stains caused by tea, coffee and smoking while reducing the bacteria that contribute to bad breath. You’ll leave with a fresher mouth, cleaner teeth and the confidence to smile every day.
How Dental Hygiene Treatment Works
Your dental hygiene appointment is designed to keep your teeth and gums healthy, prevent dental problems and help you maintain excellent oral health. Most hygiene appointments are completed in a single visit, with personalised advice to help you care for your smile between appointments.
1
Oral Health Assessment
We begin by examining your teeth, gums and overall oral health. Your hygienist will assess plaque build-up, tartar deposits, gum health and any early signs of gum disease before discussing the most appropriate treatment for your needs.
2
Professional Cleaning
Using professional instruments, we carefully remove plaque, tartar and surface stains from your teeth. Your hygienist will thoroughly clean around the gum line and polish your teeth where appropriate, helping to leave your smile feeling clean, fresh and healthy.
3
Personalised Prevention Advice
Before you leave, your hygienist will provide tailored advice on brushing, flossing and interdental cleaning to help you maintain healthy teeth and gums at home. We’ll also recommend a hygiene schedule that’s right for your oral health needs, helping you prevent future dental problems.
Dental Hygiene Treatment vs Scale and Polish
A scale and polish is one part of a full hygiene appointment. Here is what the complete treatment adds beyond the clean itself.
Think of the scale and polish as the finishing touch and the hygiene appointment as the full service. If your gums bleed, feel tender or have been neglected for a while, book the complete hygiene treatment.
Dental Hygiene FAQs
Looking for a dental hygienist in Tamworth? Our frequently asked questions explain everything you need to know about dental hygiene treatment, including professional teeth cleaning, gum disease prevention, scale and polish appointments, treatment costs and how regular hygiene visits help keep your smile healthy.
The cost of a dental hygiene appointment depends on the type of treatment required and the condition of your teeth and gums. During your visit, your hygienist will assess your oral health and recommend the most appropriate treatment for your needs. We’ll always explain the treatment involved and provide clear information about fees before your appointment begins.
Your dental hygienist will examine your teeth and gums before professionally removing plaque and tartar (calculus) from above and below the gum line. If appropriate, your teeth will also be polished to remove surface stains and leave your smile feeling fresh and clean. You’ll also receive personalised advice on brushing, flossing and maintaining good oral hygiene at home.
Professional dental hygiene appointments help prevent gum disease, reduce the risk of tooth decay and remove plaque and tartar that cannot be removed by brushing alone. Regular hygiene treatment also helps keep your breath fresh, supports long-term oral health and allows potential problems to be identified before they become more serious.
Most patients benefit from seeing a dental hygienist every six months, although some people may require more frequent visits depending on their oral health, gum condition and risk of gum disease. Your hygienist will recommend a maintenance schedule that’s tailored to your individual needs.
Most hygiene appointments are comfortable, although you may experience mild sensitivity if you have inflamed gums, exposed tooth roots or a build-up of tartar. Our hygienists work carefully to make treatment as comfortable as possible and can adapt the appointment to suit patients with sensitive teeth or dental anxiety.
Yes. Persistent bad breath is often caused by bacteria, plaque and gum disease. A professional hygiene appointment removes these deposits, helping to improve oral health and reduce the bacteria responsible for unpleasant odours. Your hygienist can also offer personalised advice to help keep your breath fresh between visits.
Dental hygiene treatment removes many surface stains caused by tea, coffee, red wine and smoking, leaving your teeth looking cleaner and brighter. However, it does not change the natural shade of your teeth like professional teeth whitening. If you’re looking for a whiter smile, your dentist can discuss suitable teeth whitening options after your hygiene appointment.
Absolutely. Dental hygiene isn’t just for treating problems, it’s one of the best ways to prevent them. Even if your teeth and gums are healthy, regular hygiene appointments help remove plaque before it causes damage, keep your gums healthy and maintain a clean, confident smile for years to come.
